www.viriditas.com - a celebration of life in its many forms
This site will slowly be developed into a celebration of life in its many forms.
I'll get around to the fancy graphics someday . . .
Some (true) stories and anecdotes
Warning: don't expect too much from these stories.
A few of these stories (speaking in the future tense) will be funny,
others will be instructive and some will simply describe events that
I want to remember.
The term viriditas appears to have been coined by Hildegard of Bingen
(1098-1179).
I first ran across the term in the Red/Green/Blue Mars trilogy by
Kim Stanley Robinson where it is used by his character Hiroko to
describe the life force of the environment in general and
Mars in particular.
This is quite a good set of sci-fi books - definitely recommended
reading for anyone interested in space travel and colonization in a
context based for the most part on reasonably conservative extrapolations
of current scientific knowledge (i.e. no faster-than-light travel
or people with mysterious powers that flaunt the currently understood
laws of physics).
Here are a few sites associated with Hildegard of Bingen:
And here's a page on Viriditas as represented within Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy.
